The River of Shadows, a historical story about Eadweard Muybridge is unlike any book I have read so far- it is like a biography, but with a heavy emphasis on the historical and cultural aspect of the time and place in the discussion. Reading from a few interview extracts, I understood that she considers herself as a modern essayist, which I totally agree with after going through her style of narration. She received many accolades and awards for her book, the River of Shadows. Apart from the River of Shadows, she is famous for her essays and works on Climate Change, feminism and related topics. An interesting aspect of her education is that she received a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, whose impact, I feel, is visible through her works and her style of narration and analysis. She is an extensive essayist for various magazines and journals, especially the Harper’s magazine. The author Rebecca Solnit is an American writer, activist, and historian, born in 1961.
